I currently use a 20gig 2nd gen iPod, black and white screen, has served me well for 5 years now stone cold reliable. I absolutely love it.
If you're trying to pick up an older model ipod or just one on the cheap maybe try a craigslist? just buyer beware.

I know woot was selling the iPod 30GB Video yesterday so there might be a spike in secondary sales on ebay or the like in the next few days.

As for the Zune, my roomate has the newest 80g model and I absolutely hate it, the beauty of the ipod is its intuitive nature, you have a button and a wheel, you use the wheel to get to what you want and then click the button. the zune has a play/pause, some backwards arrow, and then an up/down/left/right toggle. I find it difficult to browse his music collection when we're road tripping somewhere because of the slow scroll speed (It doesn't speed up like the iPod)
There's also the issue of the Zune software vs iTunes, no contest Itunes wins hands down. Relabeling tracks is a *huge* pain, getting things to display how you'd like ise clunky and/or impossible.

And the "social" option for the Zune is a colossal gimmick, sure it's a cool idea, but we live in a major university college town and have never come across someone else with a zune. Kinda hard to share music when you don't have market share.

iPod hands down imo, try picking one up from a 3rd party sale, maybe a friend updating to a new iPod?
